Adrian Newey to Become Team Principal in 2026

In a bold restructuring move designed to prepare for Formula 1’s new regulatory era, Aston Martin has officially confirmed that design legend Adrian Newey will take over as Team Principal starting in the 2026 season.

This marks a historic turning point for the Silverstone-based outfit as they align their resources to challenge for the World Championship. Alongside this appointment, current Group CEO Andy Cowell will transition into a new strategic leadership role.

Adrian Newey: From Drawing Board to the Helm

Adrian Newey, arguably the greatest designer in F1 history, joined Aston Martin earlier this year as the Managing Technical Partner following a highly successful tenure at Red Bull. However, his influence is set to expand significantly next year.

From 2026, Newey will assume the title of Team Principal for the first time in his illustrious career. In this capacity, he will not only continue to lead the technical direction and design of the car for the new regulations but will also take charge of the team's day-to-day trackside operations.

Speaking on the appointment, Newey expressed his enthusiasm: "Over the last nine months, I have seen the incredible talent within this team. I am excited to take on this expanded responsibility to ensure we are in the best possible position for the massive challenge of the 2026 regulations as Aston Martin becomes a works team."

Andy Cowell and a New Strategic Focus

Newey’s promotion sees Andy Cowell, the former Mercedes engine guru who joined Aston Martin as CEO in October 2024, moving to the position of Chief Strategy Officer.

This is a calculated move by Aston Martin to play to the strengths of its leadership team. In his new role, Cowell will focus entirely on optimizing the crucial technical partnerships that will define the team's success in the new era:

• Honda: The exclusive works Power Unit partner from 2026.

• Aramco: The sustainable fuel partner.

• Valvoline: The lubricants partner.

Cowell’s primary objective will be ensuring the seamless integration of chassis, engine, and fuel—a critical factor for winning under the upcoming engine regulations.

Lawrence Stroll, Aston Martin’s Executive Chairman, highlighted that this restructuring is about maximizing the unique skill sets of two of the sport’s most accomplished individuals.
