Formula 1 Confirms Return to Portugal for 2027 and 2028 Seasons

Formula 1 has officially announced a new two-year agreement to bring the pinnacle of motorsport back to Portugal in 2027 and 2028. The races will be held at the renowned Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, widely known as Portimão.

This return marks the first time the sport will visit the venue since the 2020 and 2021 seasons, when the circuit played a crucial role in hosting races during the Covid-19 pandemic. Located in the picturesque Algarve region, the 4.6km track is famous for its dramatic elevation changes and "rollercoaster" layout, offering a significant technical challenge for drivers.

Portugal boasts a rich Formula 1 heritage, dating back to its first Grand Prix in Porto in 1958. Over the decades, circuits like Monsanto and Estoril have hosted legendary moments, including Ayrton Senna’s maiden F1 victory in 1985. In more recent history, Portimão was the site where Lewis Hamilton secured his record-breaking 92nd career win in 2020, surpassing Michael Schumacher’s long-standing tally.

Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, expressed his excitement about the deal:

"I’m delighted to see Portimão return to the Formula 1 calendar... The circuit delivers on-track excitement from the first corner to the chequered flag." 

 

 

Manuel Castro Almeida, Portugal's Minister of Economy and Territorial Cohesion, highlighted the economic benefits, noting that the event would boost tourism and project Portugal as a competitive global destination. Jaime Costa, CEO of the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, promised a spectacle that fans will love, emphasizing the circuit's unique characteristics. 

With this agreement, fans can look forward to seeing the world's best drivers tackle the undulating curves of Portimão once again in 2027.
